How to Prepare for a Branding Photography Session | Eugene, Oregon Branding Photographer

A lifestyle branding photography session is about more than taking pictures—it is about telling the story of who you are, what you offer, and the message you want to share with the world.

Great branding images help your audience understand your business before they ever read a word about it. Your photographs should reflect your personality, your professionalism, and the experience you provide.

If you are planning a branding session with me in Eugene, Oregon, this guide will help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to step into your session with clarity.

Preparation Matters

To help your session run smoothly, I recommend preparing the night before.

  • Have all outfits chosen and packed

  • Clean and check clothing for wrinkles or hair

  • Make sure props are organized and ready

  • Get good rest

  • Avoid excess alcohol

  • Keep nails clean and well maintained

  • Wash and prepare your hands so they photograph beautifully

Your hands are often featured in branding images, so small details matter.

Create a Shot List

I highly encourage clients to prepare a list of specific shots at least one week before their shoot that they want captured.

You can be as detailed as you like.

Think about:

  • Website header images

  • Product or service demonstration shots

  • Flyers/Prints

  • Social media marketing images

  • About page portraits

  • Detail shots of your work or tools

Clothing: Match Your Brand Message

What you wear plays a major role in how your brand is perceived.

I generally recommend neutral tones and subtle patterns unless your brand identity is centered around bright, bold, or highly colorful visuals. It is also important to pick clothing items that can be for all seasons so it does not look like a super wintery photo when you post in the spring.

High-quality fabrics photograph beautifully. Look for:

  • Knits

  • Natural materials

  • Wrinkle-free pieces

  • Clothing free of lint and pet hair

The goal is to look polished without looking overly stiff or unnatural.

Your clothing should help communicate the message you want your audience to feel when they see your images.

If your brand is:

  • Cozy and casual → soft layers, earth tones, relaxed fits

  • Professional and business-forward → structured, clean lines

  • Boho or natural → warm textures and organic fabrics

  • Bright and energetic → intentional pops of color & patterns

Jewelry should follow the same philosophy—clean, intentional, and aligned with your brand story.

If you feel overwhelmed, you are always welcome to send outfit and/or prop ideas to me. I am happy to help guide you through the decision-making process.

Hair and Makeup: Keep It Clean and Simple (Usually)

Unless your brand style specifically calls for something more dramatic, I recommend keeping hair and makeup clean, natural, and polished.

If you want a more elevated look, I work with several wonderful hair and makeup artists who can help you achieve a camera-ready style that still feels like you.

Props That Help Tell Your Story

Props are one of the best ways to visually communicate what you do.

Choose props that reflect your industry and offerings.

For massage, bodywork, or wellness businesses:

  • Tuning forks

  • Singing bowls

  • Crystals

  • Burnables or relaxation tools

  • Books/journals

  • Tools you use in your practice

For business and professional brands:

  • Laptops

  • Books

  • Coffee mugs

  • Pens and journals

  • Books

For fitness and movement brands:

  • Dumbbells

  • Yoga mats

  • Stretch bands

  • Fitness tools

For artists and creators:

  • Your tools/supplies

  • Your artwork

  • Aprons or work clothing

  • Materials you use to create

The goal is simple: your images should visually explain what you offer.

Branding Is About Looking the Part

Your session is an opportunity to present yourself in a way that matches the message you want to communicate to your audience.

Think about how you want people to feel when they see your website, social media, or marketing materials.

Maybe that means cozy and approachable.Maybe it means professional and authoritative.Maybe it means artistic and creative.

Whatever your brand personality is, bring it forward.

Be yourself—but bring your best, most intentional presentation.

Location Options for Branding Sessions

I offer three different studio environments that can support a wide range of branding styles.

I am also open to photographing directly at your office or business location if you would like your branding images to reflect your workspace. I do ask to review and approve any location I have not previously suggested to ensure the lighting and environment will produce the highest quality images.

Lighting always comes before location.

Models and Additional Creative Options

If your branding session requires a client or lifestyle demonstration look, I have access to several wonderful models from different backgrounds that can help bring your vision to life.

Final Thoughts

The goal of a lifestyle branding session is for you to walk away feeling confident, prepared, and proud of how your business is represented and to of course have many images to use for many different things!

The more preparation we do in advance, the smoother and more enjoyable your session will be.

Remember, you are not expected to have everything figured out before your session. I am here to help you through the process.

Whether you are building a website, refreshing your marketing images, or launching something new, I am honored to help tell your story through photography.
