Every family session is unique — just like you! When planning your shoot, it’s so important to listen to your own style, comfort level, and desires for how you want your photos to feel. This blog is meant to serve as a guide, not a checklist you have to follow perfectly. My goal is to help you feel relaxed, prepared, and excited so we can create images that truly reflect your family’s personality and love.
As your Eugene Family Photographer, I want your experience to be fun, easy, and stress-free — so here are my best tips to help you prepare for your upcoming session!
1. Choose the Right Location
The setting sets the mood for your entire session — but remember, lighting always comes before location. Beautiful light creates beautiful photos, and I care deeply about the quality of your images. For that reason, if you have a new or personal spot in mind that I haven’t suggested, I’ll just need to approve it first to make sure it photographs beautifully at the right time of day.
Here are some options I love:
Nature Lovers: Fields, forests, and riversides around Eugene give that dreamy Pacific Northwest glow.
Urban Style: Downtown Eugene offers bold textures, fun colors, and artistic backdrops — perfect for something modern and creative.
Studio Sessions: I also work in three beautiful studios — one minimal and bright, one cozy with furniture and color options, and one dark and moody with brick and wood tones. Studio sessions are perfect for littles, branding, or when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
At Home: Cozy, meaningful, and full of connection — your own space tells your family story beautifully.
If you’re unsure where to go, I’ll help guide you to the perfect spot that fits your family’s vision and vibe. Check this blog out on some locations ideas HERE
2. Coordinate Your Outfits
Your clothing choices make a big difference in how your images feel — but don’t overthink it!
Choose colors that complement one another instead of matching exactly. (Unless that is your desired look!)
Stick with neutrals, earth tones, and subtle patterns for timeless images.
Add textures, layers, and soft fabrics for depth and interest.
Avoid loud logos or neon colors that draw attention away from your faces.
Feel free to get weird and creative! I am always open for anything!!!
💡 Pro tip: Have your outfits picked out and ready a few days before your session so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
3. Plan Around Your Family’s Energy
If you have little ones, plan your session for their happiest time of day — usually after snacks or naps. Bring water, a small treat, or their favorite toy to keep them comfortable and smiling.
And yes — if you want to promise a special treat or fun experience afterward (ice cream, playground time, etc.), go for it! Whatever keeps things light and happy works for me. However you parent, I will never judge — I’m just here to help everyone have a great time!
4. Bring Your Pets!
Your furry family members are always welcome — as long as they’re well-behaved and won’t add stress to the experience. Pets add such joy and authenticity to your images, and they make every session even more memorable.

5. Health & Weather Flexibility
Life happens — especially with kids! If anyone is sick or if we’re scheduled for an outdoor session and the weather takes a turn, it’s absolutely okay to reschedule. I want everyone to feel their best, and we can always move your session to a better day or even shift indoors to one of my beautiful studio spaces.
Please note that your deposit is non-refundable if you decide to cancel completely, but rescheduling due to weather or illness is always welcome and encouraged.
6. Embrace the Imperfections
The best photos often come from the unplanned moments — laughter, tickles, or even the silly faces. Don’t worry about perfection; just focus on connection. I’ll guide you through gentle posing and prompts while capturing those beautiful, natural in-between moments that tell your story.
7. Make It an Experience
Your photo session isn’t just about the pictures — it’s about making memories together. Laugh, explore, play, and enjoy the time as a family. Afterwards, celebrate! Grab a treat, take a walk, or go out for dinner to end the day on a high note.
