As a Eugene family photographer, one of the most common questions I hear is: “What should we wear for our fall portraits?” The golden leaves, cozy sweaters, and crisp air make autumn one of the most beautiful times of year for family photos in the Pacific Northwest. Choosing the right outfits can make your portraits feel timeless, cohesive, and truly showcase your family’s personality.
I will give exapmples of some color palets throught this blog to come back to as a reference!
Here are my top tips for what to wear to your fall family portraits in Eugene:
1. Embrace Autumn Colors
Fall in Eugene is full of vibrant oranges, deep reds, earthy greens, and golden yellows. Choosing outfits in warm, earthy tones will not only complement the scenery but also create a classic look. Think:
Burnt orange, mustard yellow, and olive green
Burgundy, rust, and deep navy, denim
Neutral layers like cream, beige, and browns
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, choose a cohesive color palette and mix and match within it. This gives everyone their own unique style while still looking polished as a group. For example, if mom is in a rust-colored dress, dad could wear a navy sweater, and the kids could be in muted plaid with touches of mustard or cream.
3. Layer Up for Comfort and Style
Eugene’s fall weather can be unpredictable—sometimes sunny and warm, other times crisp and chilly. Layering is the key! Add scarves, cardigans, vests, or jackets that can be worn or removed depending on the temperature. These layers also add depth and texture to your photos.

4. Choose Timeless Over Trendy
When you look back at your portraits years from now, you’ll want them to feel timeless. Choose classic silhouettes and fabrics—like cozy knits, boots, denims or simple button-downs—that won’t feel outdated in just a few years.

5. Don’t Forget Accessories
Accessories can tie a look together beautifully. Consider:
Hats for little ones
A cozy plaid blanket to snuggle in
Subtle jewelry for a touch of sparkle
Textured scarves to add warmth and interest
6. Prioritize Comfort
Family portraits should feel natural and fun, not stiff and uncomfortable. Make sure everyone feels good in what they’re wearing. Kids especially will photograph best if they’re in clothes they can move and play in.

7. Add a Personal Touch
Your family’s style should shine through in your portraits. If your family loves hiking, bring along your favorite boots. If you have a blanket you always use for picnics, let’s include it! These little details make your portraits feel uniquely “you.” PLEASE BRING YOUR DOG IF YOU HAVE ONE! It happens to be one of my favorite family accessories!
