Choosing what to wear for your photography session can feel exciting—and a little overwhelming. Whether you’re planning a family session, branding shoot, maternity session, or a creative self-love experience, outfits play a big role in how your final images feel.
Before anything else, I want to say this clearly: your style, your comfort, and your vision always come first. This blog is meant to be a helpful guide—not a rulebook or checklist. I encourage you to use what resonates and leave the rest.
Start With Your Personal Style
The most important thing you can wear to your session is you.
Your images should feel authentic, natural, and true to who you are—whether that means soft and romantic, playful and bold, earthy and minimal, or something totally unique. I always encourage clients to lean into their own flair rather than trying to fit a trend that doesn’t feel right.
Think about how you want your images to feel hanging on your walls (which I truly hope you’re doing!). Your outfits should complement the image—not distract from it—unless standing out is your intentional goal.
Color Palettes That Photograph Beautifully
For most spring and summer sessions, I recommend choosing outfits that complement one another without being overly “matchy.”
Colors that photograph beautifully on most people include:
Earth tones (cream, beige, rust, olive, warm browns)
Soft pastels
Muted blues and greens
You can absolutely mix tones within the same color family for depth and interest.
If you’re feeling adventurous, themes can be fun too:
Dark and moody with blacks and deep neutrals & or jewel tones
Light and airy spring vibes with florals
Holiday-inspired palettes
Or even bold looks with neons, costumes, or onesies
There is no wrong answer if it feels true to you.
Texture Matters More Than You Think
Textures add visual richness and dimension to your images. Some of my favorites include:
Knits
Denim
Linen
Khaki
Soft, textured or patterned fabrics (used sparingly)
Having one or two people in subtly patterned fabrics can be lovely—just avoid anything too loud unless that’s the goal. The key is balance.
Outfit Tips for Women
I’ll be honest—I am a huge sucker for flowy dresses. They photograph beautifully and move so naturally on camera. Skirts paired with knit tops are another favorite of mine.
That said:
Comfort is essential
Choose fabrics that don’t wrinkle easily
Higher-quality fabrics and knits tend to photograph best
Pinterest can honestly do a better job than I ever could at outfit inspiration—but keep comfort and authenticity at the top of your list.
Spring & Summer Locations Around Eugene
One of the best parts of photographing in Eugene, Oregon during spring and summer is the abundance of stunning natural backdrops. I have many trusted locations that truly shine this time of year, including:
Hendricks Park with its seasonal blooms
Owen Rose Garden for a romantic, floral feel
Wildflower fields out toward Elmira
These locations pair beautifully with soft tones, flowing fabrics, and natural textures. Lighting always comes first for me, so if you have a location in mind that I haven’t suggested, I just need to approve it ahead of time to ensure the best possible results.
A Few Final Thoughts
The biggest secret to great outfits? Don’t overthink it.Choose pieces you feel good in, that move well, and that align with your personality.
And remember—this is meant to be fun. Whether you’re dressed up, barefoot in a field, cozy at home, or leaning fully into creativity, my job is to capture you in a way that feels honest, beautiful, and effortless.
If you ever feel stuck, I’m always happy to help guide you.
Shine on,
Faliesha Dawne
