How To Prepare For Your Maternity Photo Session | Eugene Maternity Photographer

ree

Pregnancy is such a beautiful, transformative time, and capturing it through a maternity session is something you’ll treasure forever. Every pregnancy is different, so it’s important to listen to your own body and desires for your session. This guide is meant to be a helpful starting point—not a complete checklist! Together, we’ll create something that feels uniquely you.

When to Book

Typically, the sweet spot for maternity photos is around weeks 35–37. This is when your belly has that gorgeous, full look, but you’re still comfortable moving and posing. That said, everyone’s journey is different—some clients prefer earlier, especially with twins or high-risk pregnancies. It’s completely up to you!

I always do my best to remain flexible. If you need to reschedule because you don’t feel well that day, or if we need to adjust based on timing, we can absolutely do that.

Who to Bring

Bring whoever makes this chapter feel complete:

  • Your partner, for those beautiful, tender moments.

  • Your children, to capture their excitement for their new sibling.

  • Your fur babies—dogs make amazing photo companions!

Or, if you’d rather focus on yourself, solo maternity sessions are incredibly empowering and serene. Either way, it’s all about honoring your story.

Props & Personal Touches

Bring any special items that tell your story—like:

  • Ultrasound photos

  • Tiny baby shoes or onesies

  • Signs or keepsakes

  • A favorite blanket

These small details can add a sweet personal touch to your images.

Location, Location… Lighting!

When it comes to where we shoot, I always say it’s lighting over location every time. I care deeply about the quality of your images, so I must approve each location if it’s one I haven’t already suggested.

I have three beautiful studio options that are perfect year-round, as well as several outdoor favorites around Eugene.

Here are some ideas:

  • Nature: soft, golden light and timeless beauty.

  • Home: intimate and cozy.

  • Studio: classic, simple, and controlled lighting.

  • Urban: bold and creative for something different!

What to Wear

I absolutely love flowy dresses for maternity sessions—they move beautifully and flatter every shape. I also love texture: knits, ruffle, lace, layers, hats, fun jewlery etc. But don’t be afraid to be unique!

I also love one of your outfits to allow that beautiful belly to show if you are comfortable with it! It is so beautiful and such a miracle! It coud be just a cute belly shirt with a flowy skirt or something more revealing, totally your call!

Whether you want a cozy in-home look or a more intimate studio session, your outfit should feel authentic to you.

If you’d like a little extra pampering, I work with several amazing local hair and makeup artists who specialize in natural, photo-ready looks. It’s such a lovely way to feel nurtured and confident on your big day.

The Night Before

A little prep can make your session day relaxed and enjoyable:

  • Get plenty of rest and drink lots of water.

  • Have your outfits and props packed and ready to go.

  • If you’re feeling unwell or the weather doesn’t cooperate, it’s totally fine to reschedule. Just please communicate with me as soon as possible.

Your non-refundable deposit only applies if you cancel or do not show up altogether—not if you need to move your date.

Final Thoughts

Your maternity session is about celebrating you—your strength, your story, and the life growing inside of you. Whether we’re out in the golden Oregon light, cozy at home, or creating studio magic, I’ll make sure your experience feels just as beautiful as the images we create.

Shine on,
